Mary Ann Rose Hart, a retired teacher, began her career of 36 years teaching French in grades 3-6 in East Tennessee transitioning to grades 3-5 in North Carolina. The author received a master’s degree in education from Appalachian State University with emphasis on the emerging adolescent and reading skills instruction. Mary Ann enjoyed teaching reading, creative writing, and math in a multi-cultural school. It was her fifth graders who inspired their Mrs. Hart to write more stories to read aloud to them. While serving for many years as math lead teacher, Mary Ann wrote math activities which were presented at regional and state math conferences. Mary Ann’s Mountain is the author’s first novel, a nod to her mountain heritage.
Mary Ann’s Mountain has the timeless theme of the life of a preadolescent girl caught between being a child and a teenager. Life on a farm in the mountainous coalfields of Virginia and challenges at school make this mountain girl aware that life changes from day to day while she is changing as well. A caring family and friends help Mary Ann face the unknowns of tomorrow.
A visit to the author’s website will provide the classroom or homeschool teacher with free downloads for guided reading activities as well as math enrichment activities for the book, Mary Ann’s Mountain. The author brings a wealth of classroom experience to these activities. Watch for postings on her blog.
Mary Ann now lives with her husband of 45 years and their cat, Gus, in North Carolina. Gus is the latest orphan who has come to live in this home of animal lovers.
